Serving Baldwin
av Varun Narain
This play is performed in English.
This is an interactive performance that brings to light the relevance of James Baldwins literary work in articulating contemporary global queer realities. Interlacing characters, scenes and texts from Baldwins essays, novels and scripts, this performance uses puppetry, acting and music to engage the audience in a dialogue about the queer realities with their multicultural resonances in Norway today. Unfolding around a bed, this interaction uses a life sized puppet of James Baldwin and a performer and shadow puppetry and a musician-actor to enact what happens when love and self- knowledge are made impossible.
The aim of this performance is to articulate using Baldwins words, the relentless powers of racism, casteism, homophobia, and emotional repression that continue to the deny the freedom to love, causing personal tragedy and social crimes with fatal consequences.
